What’s The Difference Between Mixing & Mastering
We are quickly explaining about the difference between and mixing and mastering this week. No more confusion!
MIXING is when you have separate channel for each instruments such as bass, drums, vocals, guitars, keyboards and so on, and mix everything into a stereo path. Remember, when you have several instrument in separated audio files, you have a mixer to work with, but when you have only two speakers and two ears, you need a stereo file to finally goes to next step, mastering.
MASTERING means taking the stereo file and maximising it in order for it to sound as best as possibly can, that includes putting final touches such as EQ, loudness, compression, maybe widening and making sure it’s ready for distribution.
In principle, mixing is done with multiple audio files and mastering is done with one stereo pair of mixed audio file.
